NAME:
Kathryn Martin
MCC MEMBER SINCE:
2014. I saw a leaflet for The Motor Cycling Club's London to Lands End Trial. I think I'll have a go at that! And the MCC was born into my life.
WHAT VEHICLE DO YOU USE TO COMPETE IN MCC EVENTS?
My dear Honda CFR 230. It became my friend, my steady athlete getting me from start to the finish. Spending so much time with him I began to learn his character, and Humphrey the Honda became his name. He has the level head of a surgeon, but the pleaser ability of Jason Statham, (well I'd like to sample!) I think my amigo enjoys these events as much as I do. Not complaining if it's boiling hot with a hard surface, or cold, raining, hail or snow, he just adapts. He keeps going and I love it.
My son said to me once, "you'd ride an ironing board if it had an engine". Well that's pretty much what Humphrey feels like to ride. But I know no different. Suspension? Nope, definitely not a good feeling. Brakes? With the drum rear he may as well have bicycle brake blocks. Although he doesn't go fast enough to even need brakes, so they're probably not over necessary. But the motor? Its as smooth as the leg of a supermodel, and as kind as the eyes of a Nun.
HOW HAS THE VEHICLE PERFORMED AT MCC EVENTS?
I think Humphrey's biggest boast is he has achieved a medal in every MCC Trial we have done, and his piece de resistance was in 2018 winning us a prestigious MCC Triple Medal, and being the first lady on a solo to do so. Dang I was so proud of him, I remember shedding a tear as I left the final timed test of the Edinburgh Trial. That's how much this bike means to me. He's freaking awesome.
WHAT ADIVCE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE THINKING ABOUT ENTERING THEIR FIRST LONG DISTANCE TRIAL?
If you think you can do it, then you have already won. Nothing's ever out of reach, just do it. learn on the job and you will definitely surprise yourself, even if ones desire does outweigh the ability. There's that saying isn't there, "Its not what you've got its how you use it." And in our case, Humphrey uses me pretty well.
