OS maps needed for Exeter
« on: December 27, 2017, 11:12:37 pm »
From looking at the route book, it seems the main ones we need are 191, 192, 193 and 202. Looks like 183 might also be useful, but would be helpful to have confirmation - what do we absolutely require?

You won't need maps for the trial; the route book is perfectly adequate. In all the years I've competed, the only maps I've taken have been some pages ripped out of a road atlas (I'm on a bike) just in case I couldn't finish, then had to find my way home part-way through the trial.  If you get lost on the trial, retracing your route will get you back on the trial route proper.

The Ordnance Survey maps are only useful when you're at home and want to see where the sections are located; the normal road atlas won't always give those details.

Hi Toby,
I have to concur with Paul. If you even try to map read AND follow the route card you will only get confused.
The route twists and turns all over the place and even trying to get one's bearings can be quite difficult.
As Paul says just follow the route card carefully, take your time and enjoy yourself.
One other tip, even if you are behind a group, continue to follow the route card. It has not been unknown for a group leader to go wrong and the rest follow like sheep. If you think the guy at the front has gone wrong then stop and double check, you will soon have another competitor arrrive to give a second opinion.

Thanks both. I've done the Lands End and Edinburgh as a passenger and having the maps helped with confidence and general awareness of where we were, though in truth we probably didn't need them to complete the event. For the Exeter I will be driving and my passenger hasn't done a LDT before so I think we'd both be more comfortable knowing where we are!

The Okehampton start is at Betty Cottles Inn, Tavistock road, Graddon Cross, EX20 4LR.  The first bike is away at 19:31 hr; last bike at 20:15 hr.  The first car is away at 21:04 hr; last car at 21:55 hr.

Give a few words of encouragement to competitor 107, Stephen Wickers, Ford Escort. He reckons he's got another 5 HP out of the engine; wishful thinking I reckon  :D
