Exeter 2008

Jonny Smith and Tom Ford, from Channel 5's Fifth Gear, tackle Tillerton in their VW Beetle 1600 during the 2008 Exeter Trial.

Lands End 2004

Once again, Dave Haizelden shows everyone the way to do it in his Class 1 Golf, cleaning Blue Hills 1 on his way to (yet) another MCC Gold Medal and Class win, this time on the 2004 Lands End Trial.

Before you start

  • Have you read the Introduction page?
  • If you're on your own, and don't know any existing MCC competitors, get in touch with Ian Davis, who deals with public relations for cars and car competitors, and ask him to put you in touch with someone local, or someone who is a regular competitor with a similar car.
  • Ian Davis [E-mail: gbbuggydriver@hotmail.com]

Garage work

  • You need to decide what type of car to use (4x4s not allowed), and which Class to enter. The ACTC produce an excellent information sheet available from this link.
  • Study the MCC Regulations for events and check-out the Approved Tyre List for cars.
  • You will need to prepare your car. Once again, thanks to our friends at the ACTC for producing the information sheet available from this link.

Paper work

  • Join the MCC - see the Membership page.
  • You do not need an MSA Competition Licence to compete in MCC events, nor for some ACTC events which specifically invite MCC members to compete (these are known as Clubsport events).
  • You do need an MSA Competition Licence if you wish to compete in ACTC Championship events. This is different from the motorcyclists who need an ACU licence for all events.
  • You will have to decide which trial to enter, and in which class. Check out MCC Class 0 and decide whether to start with this "easier" option or whether to plunge into the main trial in the appropriate class for your vehicle.
  • ... and finally, remember that every car must have both a driver and a passenger, so start looking for willing friends to join you in your adventure. The passenger does not need to be a member of the MCC nor, indeed, any motor club.
