The Lands End Trial - Where to spectate

Blue Hills (Main Trial and Class 0)

  • Why spectate at Blue Hills?: Quite simply because it is the most spectacular setting of any trials hill anywhere in the UK, with magnificent views in both directions along the North Cornwall coastline. There are three sections - 'old' Blue Hills, which features in photographs from the 1920s and early 1930s, is tackled by Class 0, whilst Classes 1 to 8 attempt Blue Hills 1 in the bottom of the valley, and the rough-and-rocky Blue Hills 2 which climbs steeply up the south side of Trevellas Combe. As most of the action takes place on the Saturday afternoon of the Easter weekend, there is always a huge crowd and a wonderful atmosphere.
  • Section begins at OS Landranger/Grid Ref: 204/728517.
  • Directions: Please arrive via the centre of St Agnes, either avoiding the competitors' exit route or being aware of competitors leaving the section. Do not, under any circumstances, attempt to arrive from the Cross Coombe side because the road will be closed - and you will NOT be allowed through.
  • Parking: Please park in the designated parking areas only or, if these are full, please park sensibly on the roadside without causing an obstruction. Be warned - the Police will be out in force and will take action if you block the road or any entrances.
  • Timing (2008): First motorcycle due at 11.10. Last car due at 16:14.

Crackington (Main Trial only)

  • Why spectate at Crackington?: Crackington or Darracott? Take your pick. They both offer a wooded section which is virtually unchanged since the 1930s, although the bridge at the bottom of Crackington suffered badly in the floods of August 2004. Crackington is straighter and wider and many cars provide a good spectacle as they fight to get through the mud and ruts towards the top of the section.
  • Section begins at OS Landranger/Grid Ref: 190/158961.
  • Directions: Please approach from Higher Crackington avoiding the trial route, shown highlighted on the map below, as much as possible. Please do not try and approach from the north, either along the trial route or on the very narrow road via Congdons Bridge.
  • Parking: Please park on the 'yellow' roads around Lower and Middle Crackington, but please park sensibly and without causing an obstruction. Do not attempt to follow the trial route down to the section - there is no parking at Mineshop.
  • Timing (2008): First motorcycle due at 06:20. Last car due at 11.24.

Darracott (Main Trial only)

  • Why spectate at Darracott?: Darracott or Crackington? Take your pick. They both offer a wooded section which is virtually unchanged since the 1930s. Darracott is narrower, rougher, and has several good hairpin bends where vehicles have to slow down to take the corners. You can also see the Leddon Farm Special Test for another view of trialling.
  • Section begins at OS Landranger/Grid Ref: 190/232173.
  • Directions: Please approach Darracott village from the east 'against the flow' of the trial route being at all times aware of the competitors coming towards you. Do not even think of going anywhere near Gooseham which is a very sensitive area.
  • Parking: Please park on the 'yellow' roads around Darracott village, but please park sensibly and without causing an obstruction. Do not even think of parking in Gooseham and walking down the trial route to the start of the section.
  • Timing (2008): First motorcycle due at 05:05. Last car due at 10.09.

Hoskin (Main Trial only)

  • Why spectate at Hoskin?: Unless the weather has been dry for weeks before the event, Hoskin provides a serious challenge for most competitors, particularly those who have to restart on the teflon-like stone surface.
  • Section begins at OS Landranger/Grid Ref: 200/112678.
  • Directions: The only approach is from the west following the signs for Cardinham Woods from the A38 on the outskirts of Bodmin.
  • Parking: There is ample parking in the designated parking areas at the entrance to the woods. These are off the map below, in the direction shown. You will then have a short walk down a wide forest track to the section.
  • Timing (2008): First motorcycle due at 09:05. Last car due at 14:09.
